Installed By Company - Although these systems are typically very easy to install yourself (see our Basic Installation & Set-Up video) some might find it convenient to have it professionally installed, especially if you live a long distance from your loved one. If there is not an ADT installer or authorized ADT Dealer in your area, then there is a $49.00 activation fee for the self installation kit.

Automatic Monthly Tests – System's console will automatically test monthly to the monitoring station. Some companies offer the preferred weekly test, but others offer no automatic testing at all.

24-Hour Support – ADT has support available 24 hours per day.

Dislikes:

No Cancel at Any Time Policy– If you are not happy with your system or service, you can not cancel for that reason. You're signing a 1 year contract. We were told, however, that they do extend special consideration for life changing circumstances.

No Activity Monitoring – Activity monitoring typically requires the user to check in with the system by pressing a button once every 24 hours. This is very beneficial as it allows you to know that your loved one is active and about each day.

No Discounts For Advanced Payments – Monthly payments are your only option. The convenience of quarterly or annual payments can be desirable, especially if you can receive a discount.

No Fall Detector Option – Since diabetics can have the tendency to faint, fall detectors can be helpful because the user would be unable to press their medical emergency button.

Bottom Line:

ADT is the largest security company in the world. They have been monitoring security alarms for a long time. That's not to say that bigger is always better. Although the sales rep we spoke with was very courteous and generally helpful, more technical training on the product would be helpful. Some questions required verification by others while others were clearly incorrect. We were told that the battery in the neck or wrist style buttons do not need to be changed. That may be true if you must replace the entire button when the battery gets low, but we were led to believe that the battery simply doesn't die. Impossible.

We do like the fact that you can receive some discount if you are already an ADT customer or an AARP member. We also like the fact that professional installation is available, if someone really needs that service. Remember the ADT Companion Service requires a 1 year contract.
